How to Choose Your Dog | Print |

"Choosing a  Dog For Dummies" is a good resource for choosing the right dog for you.

There are many healthy adoptable animals awaiting  homes in shelters.  Consider adopting one. Many have been in homes and already are housetrained and over that "shoe chewing" stage.

If you want a purebred animal, make sure you choose a responsible breeder.  Pet store animals are not the best choice and are often a spontaneous purchase with little or no preparation.  These dogs often come from "puppy mills.", not a good situation. Learn all about the breed you are considering.

Geting a pet is a life long committment;  choosing the wrong dog for you ends in heartbreak for both you and the animal.  Many dogs, although cute, loveable and beautiful, for one reason or another, may not be suitable for your situation.

Your veterinarian can be of great assistance.  If you do not have a veterinarian it is a good idea to select one before getting the dog as it will need veterinary care.  It is helpful to be familiar with the veterinarian, cost of care, cost of food, supplies, etc. in advance, so your home is ready for its newest member.
